Counseling Programs

Classroom Guidance. Classroom guidance is a whole group setting that allows the counselor the opportunity to build relationships by spending time with every student at Walter P. Jones. In addition, the counselor teaches lessons on how to get along with others and how to make good decisions through character education lessons. Students get to know the counselor better, and when problems arise, they feel comfortable in sharing their concerns.

Individual Counseling. Individual counseling is offered to students who are not comfortable with sharing their problems in front of other students, or if they feel that they (or the counselor) should be discreet in the information that they are sharing. All information shared with the counselor is kept confidential unless the counselor feels that the child's or someone else's life may be in danger. If danger is suspected, the information is reported immediately to the next official in charged.

Small Group Services Offered. The Counseling Department offers a variety of small groups and counseling programs for students. Each group program is voluntary. The groups meet once or twice monthly during the school day. Students are responsible for make-up work, and we expect for them to continue to excel and also improve socially and academically.

Bulldog WarriorsAcademic support group for students in 1st-5th grade who receive any failing grade on the progress/academic report during the school year. This group is design to teach strategies in assisting students to identify with their strength, weaknesses, abilities, and interest in becoming successful students.

Bulldog Coolers This group will provide students with a variety of strategies in coping with stressin today’s society. People in general, including kids, are stressed more than ever. Everyone experiences stress and fears, which is normal. What is not normal is how stress and fears get in the way of normal living.

Forgotten Grievers. This group will provide students with a variety of strategies to assist them through the grieving process. Students grieve when: parents separate or divorce, when parents are having relational difficulties, when a friend moves away, when pet dies, when any major change occurs, when a death occurs, when they are not told the truth, when they are excluded, when their feelings are not heard, when security/familiarity changes, and when serious illness occurs in the family.

Controlling Anger Group - This group will provide students with a variety of strategies to improve the way they react and respond to people when they become upset/angry.

Students will learn and understand the school discipline plan and learn that there are consequences for not following school rules. Students may possibly meet with Bibb County School Police Officers and Macon Police Officers to learn strategies for succeeding in school and in the real world.

Getting Along With Others Group - This group will provide students with a variety of strategies to improve their social skills. Students will have lessons on: 1) how to work with others, 2) how to have patience with their peers, 3) how to make friends, 4) how to be a good friend, and 5) how to have healthy relationships with others.
