Welcome!

It is my pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to you as we begin the 2012-2013 school year at Alexander II Math and Science Magnet SchoolFall is the time of year to reconnect with old friends and welcome new friends. To those students and parents who are new to Alex II we extend an especially warm welcome, and best wishes for an exciting and productive year in your new school. We hope that you will quickly feel at home and become involved in the activities of our school through the PTA and your child’s classroom program.

Alexander II serves students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.  Our 540 students are welcomed to our school from across the county through a lottery process that begins each October. We are a Title I school where data drives our instruction with an ongoing comprehensive assessment system in place to identify, target, monitor, and improve student performance as well as curriculum and instruction.

A developmentally appropriate curriculum addresses all core domains on a daily basis.  Reading/ Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies instruction is provided by a highly qualified staff and aligned with the state of Georgia’s standards.  These standards are naturally integrated in everyday school life.  Each content area has a strong emphasis on reading and writing as literacy skills are considered to be the foundation upon which children are prepared for full participation in today’s society, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, disability, or socioeconomic status.

Specialists in the area of literacy, math, science, music, media, and physical education collaborate with general education teachers to best meet the needs of students. Technology integration is also instrumental and instruction is enriched through classroom teaching stations, United Streaming, and numerous websites.  Diversity in learning styles is addressed in the planning of individual teachers.  Teachers modify assignments, provide tutoring, and allow time for one-on-one and small group instruction to accommodate the needs of identified students.  Inclusion is provided in grades 1-5 for qualifying students.  After school intervention and enrichment opportunities are provided through our After School Program.  Teachers use a RTI (Response to Intervention), tiered lesson planning and a variety of instructional tools to address learning styles and levels.  A pull-out enrichment class is provided to high achievers.

Parent and community engagement is of utmost importance to Alexander II.  Through our award winning PTA Volunteer program, parents are encouraged to be active participants in their child’s education.

Alexander II has quite a history of excellence, and our expectations are high.  Be in attendance every day, be on time, come prepared, work hard, and push yourself to achieve your personal best each day.  Don’t be discouraged by difficult tasks, but use them as opportunities to find creative solutions – to learn and grow. With a “can-do” attitude and working hand-in-hand…students, parents, and staff…you will grow to realize the potential within.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve Alexander II.  It’s going be another great year!

Respectfully,

Mrs. Cindy Canova, Principal
