Senior Meeting with Balfour Rep
~ October 16th at 7:45 am
Senior Conferences: Mrs. Peterec will be meeting with each of you individually over the course of the semester to review where you stand in terms of graduation requirements and to double check your second semester schedule.
SAT and ACT: If you have not yet taken the SAT or the ACT, you need to register for the fall test dates. Please see test dates and costs in this packet. It is important that you register for the fall test dates so that you can get your scores back in order to meet college deadlines. Limited ACT and SAT booklets are available in the counseling area. Registering on-line is a great way for you to know immediately if you have gotten in to the test center of your choice. You can print out your admissions ticket right then and are ready to go. To register on-line for the SAT go to http://www.collegeboard.com/ or to register for the ACT go to http://www.act.org/ . Be sure that you request your tests scores be sent to the colleges of your choice from these websites as well.
Fee Waivers: If you receive free or reduced lunch, you can receive a fee waiver for the SAT, the ACT, and the NCAA registration. Please see Mrs. Peterec for these fee waivers.
Helpful Websites: There are many different websites, but here are a few that are very beneficial to the college/career search:
http://www.gcic.edu/ (User name: westsidehsb Password: gcis1000)
College Visitations: You are encouraged to make college visits; absences for college visits will not count against perfect attendance as they will be marked as a field trip. You must pick up a college visitation form from Mrs. Peterec several days before your scheduled visit. No college visits will be excused after the visit.
College and Career Fairs: Mark your calendars and attend!
Probe College Fair – This is a cannot miss event! Students will be able to talk with college representatives, get admissions criteria, financial aid info. There will be a presentation by the Georgia Student Finance Commission which will cover topics such as HOPE, FAFSA and GACollege411.
GA Tech and University of Georgia Student Information Session. To register for the STUDENT Information Session visit www.admissions.uga.edu/infosessions.
100 Black Men Of Macon College Fair—usually in October...more information to come.
NCAA Student-Athlete – If you are planning to participate in college-level sports, you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. You can register online at http://www.clearinghouse.net/ . After you have registered and paid your fee, please download a request for a preliminary transcript to be sent to the clearinghouse and give to the registrar. If you qualify for a fee waiver for either the SAT or the ACT, you are eligible to have the NCAA registration fee waived. You will need to see Mrs. Peterec in order to receive the NCAA fee waiver.
College Applications: Start now checking on deadlines to apply!!!!!!
Many colleges are requiring that you register online. Most Georgia colleges and universities have applications on their website. Also, http://www.gacollege411.org/ will lead you to the application sites and you can select multiple Georgia Schools and send your application.
Georgia Apply to College Program: Westside High has set aside November 9, 2012 for all seniors to get help applying to college.
Transcripts: All official transcripts needed for college applications and scholarships need to be requested from the Front Office. You receive three free transcripts per year. If additional transcripts are needed, the cost is $2.00 per transcript. At the end of the school year you will need to request a final transcript to be sent to the college of your choice; the cost for your final transcript is $3.00.
Scholarships: There are many scholarship search engines…but, be leery of any offer that costs you money for scholarship information. Two websites that have scholarship information are http://www.gacollege411.org/ and http://www.gcic.peachnet.edu/ (user name: westsidehsb password: gcis1000). Also, Mrs. Peterec will create a scholarship list, which will be posted on the Westside High School Website--Senior page.
Student Resumes: You will need to create a resume with all pertinent information to help your teachers and counselors write college letters of recommendations. If you are not sure how to start, there are several templates on word processing programs. Your resume should include the basic information (name, address, phone, email) as well as all honors (both in and out of school), work experience, volunteer experiences, etc.
Counselor Recommendations: In order to meet deadlines, it is imperative that Mrs. Peterec have the request a minimum of two weeks before the deadline. Remember, there is only one of her and over 200 seniors!
To request a counselor recommendation:
1) Complete a College Application Counselor Recommendation Form.
2) Attach a resume and the counselor recommendation form from the college (a separate form for each college is needed).
3) Turn in all three to me TWO weeks prior to the deadline.
4) Once your recommendation is complete, you will be contacted. You will need to sign for your recommendation when you pick it up.
FYI…UGA’s early action deadline is October . Check out (http://www.admissions.uga.edu/)
Teacher Recommendations: Please be selective when asking teachers to write you recommendations…It is a fair question to ask teachers first if they could write you a positive recommendation…Find the teachers who will write you the best recommendation. Remember, you are competing with many other students to get into the college of your dreams.
To Request a teacher recommendation
1) First ask if the teacher is willing to write a positive recommendation
2) Give the teacher your resume and all the pertinent information for the recommendation
3) Teachers also need a minimum of two weeks prior to the deadline to complete your letter of recommendation
Financial Aid: Students should start now researching financial aid.
1) In order to apply for HOPE it will be necessary for you to have an account set up at http://www.gacollege411.org/
2) In December, you will need to apply for a PIN at http://www.pined.gov/ in order to apply for federal financial aid online. Applying on-line is the fastest and most accurate way for the federal government to evaluate your application
3) In January, you will need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1st as possible at http://www.fatsa.ed.gov/ .
