Promotion Requirements

for 3rd Grade Students

Dear Parent or Guardian of a Third Grade Student,

In order to follow state law and state Board of education rule, Bibb County Public Schools gives the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) to students in grades one through eight.  These tests will be administered in the Bibb County School System from April 14 – 25, 2008.  Georgia law resulted in the passage of State Rule 160-4-2.11 which requires students to score at grade level in reading on the third grade CRCT in order to be promoted to the next grade level beginning in 2004.  This requirement is in addition to meeting promotion criteria in Bibb County.

Local criteria for promotion include passing both reading and mathematics, with at least 70% mastery.  In addition, a student cannot be failing three academic courses.

Scoring “at grade level” on the CRCT Reading test is indicated by earning a score of 800 or above.  If your child does not earn a score of at least 800, he or she will be in danger of not being promoted.  Each student must earn a score of 800 and meet the promotion criteria for Bibb County listed above.  The following table presents promotion criteria and possible outcomes for 3rd grade students:

In order to help all 3rd grade students in Bibb County Public Schools meet these criteria, several initiatives have been put into place, many of them for the past few years.  Data analysis has been used to pinpoint students’ weak areas and provide further instruction on those skills. The Early Intervention Program (EIP) has been providing additional small group instruction to eligible students in reading and math.

Always encourage your child to do his or her best at school.  Contact your child’s teacher to check on his or her present progress during the year.  Read with your child at home.  These and other strategies will help prepare each one of our third graders to do their best and meet state standards on the 2008 CRCT Reading Test.
