As part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning community sponsored by Georgia College & State University (GCSU), STEM teachers and students from Northeast High School visited Lake Laurel on October 5, 2011 for a day-long environmental science program.
Students participated in macro invertebrate testing and soil sampling. Encouraging student interest and participation in STEM is a goal of the STEM learning community at Northeast High School. This field trip gave students an opportunity to learn with college educators and GCSU graduate students, in addition to Northeast High School STEM teachers. Another STEM field experience on the Georgia College campus is planned for Spring, 2012. Along with student field trips, the GCSU STEM Grant, supervised by Dr. Sandra Webb, Assistant Professor, and in coordination with Ruth Eilers, Director of Academic Outreach at Georgia College will provide additional STEM experiences for students and ongoing professional development in STEM for classroom teachers at Northeast High School. [Principal Comments] Dr. Quintin Green, "I have longed for an opportunity to release students from the mundane tasks of "sitting and getting," and appreciate the forward thinking of our teachers and students in the STEM program. The support for STEM programs in schools is phenomenal! We look forward, with great anticipation and expectation, to developing a STEM academy that increases the possibilities for success for our most capable students.Seeing the students learn in innovative, engaging manners, and applying this knowledge to everyday living encourages high hopes for the future of education." [Science Teacher/STEM Coordinator] Mrs. Dinkins, "STEM is a wonderful learning opportunity for students. Our partnership with Georgia College allows our students to experience hands-on activities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. [Technology Teacher] Mrs. Bowman, " I feel that STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases computer literacy, and enables the next generation of creative innovators". [Northeast Student] Raymond Wells,"The STEM program gives me a look into the future of education. We have learned so much from the STEM research trips and our teachers.
